Der Herrenabend meets on the 3rd Friday of each month and begins at approximately 7:30pm.
In Germany, before the time of Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm, German host would invite his male friends for an evening dinner or small repast. The men could play at cards or have discussions about politics; current events or they could relive the great military adventures or their time.
No women could attend so some of their "gentlemanly" manners would be set aside for an evening so that the "boys could be boys." The events would not be considered "stag parties" because the German society of the time wouldn't condone such activity.
During the course of the evening, the Gentlemen would break into song or recite poems and limericks for the entertainment of the other men. These events would sometimes last to the wee hours of the morning.
This meeting of just men was called the "Herrenabend" or "Gentlemen's Night."
The Herrenabend has a long history at the BSV. There are framed cartoons on the walls of the BSV depicting Herrenabende of days past.
For a time the BSV Herrenabend was set aside but now, once a month the BSV hosts "der Herrenabend" or "Gentlemen's Evening."
Some play card games such as poker, cribbage or Skat. Mostly the men sit and discuss politics, sports, current events or anything that they want. The discussions can become boisterous but they are always fun. Arguments are strictly prohibited even though comments may be shouted across the room. There is a great amount of laughter and camaraderie at the events and new members to the club find that they are easily assimilated into the BSV community.
The food that is served is presented by --- anyone who wants to volunteer! The menu has included roast pork with "fixins," Rouladen, spaghetti and meatballs and even Chili. It is not an entirely German menu. The cost of the meal is covered by a minimal donation. During the holiday season, there is a ritual Feuerzangenbowle or "Fire Bowl." This is a long time tradition in parts of Germany.
Keep in mind, on this night only, women are not allowed to attend or even be present to assist with cooking. It is the last bastion of male independence.
The Herrenabend meets on the 3rd Friday of each month in the club Rathskeller. It begins at approximately 7:30 PM and lasts until closing. It is open to members and those who might like to investigate and become members.
Come and enjoy...
