Skat is a card game for three or four players. If four are to play the dealer must sit out each hand while the remaining three players play out the hand. Skat was created in Germany some time before the year 1811.
The word "Skat" itself is derived from an Italian game called Tarock in which two cards are laid away and called the "skat" cards or simply the "skat".
Some elements of Skat appear to have been derived from a game called Schafskopf which we know as Sheepshead. Other portions of Skat come from the games of Solo and Ombre.

Members of the Boylston Schul-Verein Skat Club also participate annually in competition with other Skat clubs in the Catskills. In 2002, the Skat Club emerged as the winning team. Each January the Skat Club sponsors a Preis Skat open to all Skat players in the local area. Prizes are awarded.
